Why InstantCareerAdvice.com Exists
To explain why this website exists, let me tell you a little bit about me and my story.
In the past, I ran an IT recruitment house in Hong Kong. I was busily involved in recruiting talents from all over the world to Hong Kong and China. My clients included many international firms such as Yahoo! and Motorola, as well as many small startups including Wherever.net and more. There were then (and are still today) many foreign companies setting up offices here in Hong Kong with the aim of expanding in China where they can find the world’s fastest-growing market.
At the peak of that career, I interviewed more than 1000 candidates a year, all from different nationalities with different backgrounds. The only thing they had in common was they wanted my help in seeking golden work opportunities in Hong Kong and China. I was so heavily involved in all kinds of talent recruitment that I seldom had time to write – and writing is my actual interest!
In those days, I came across many people demonstrating their utmost interview skills to me. I watched many candidates successfully secure new openings with their unique talents and capabilities. On the other hand, I also saw many people who failed in the job hunting process, either because of their own actions or because of their inability to adapt to the ever-changing business environment. You know, during the period between 2000 and 2006, we had gone through the dot-com boom and burst, the terrorist attack in New York in 2001 that shook the entire world, and the SARS outbreak in Hong Kong in 2003 that almost stalled the economy here. And then the slow recovery of the economy began in 2003.
In 2006, I decided to re-organize my management team to offload my daily involvement in the people recruitment business so that I can concentrate more on my teaching and training business, which I find more interesting. And of course, I could write more then. (However, it’s still a bit difficult since my old clients constantly phone me for help in their openings simply because of my many connections in the field!)
I have a keen interest in buildings a comprehensive online reference for helping job hunters and corporate people move forward in their careers. I have observed thousands of success and failure stories in my past recruitment business and other work experience, and I wish to share the knowledge of the magic of career and job hunting that I gained from that extensive experience.
To that end, this website Instant Career Advice includes my writings from 2006 to the present. (You can still view my older articles at my previous website http://www.itotalsearch.com and our new executive business website http://winkenhk.com)
Since my first language is not English, most of my writings here are edited and refined by my team of writers to bring you the best reading experience when visiting this website.
I hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering and a master’s degree in business administration. Prior to running my own business, I was involved in the sales, marketing, and training of IT products in Hong Kong and China. I was a keen climber of the corporate ladder and I learned all sorts of tricks and techniques working in multi-national firms. I hope I can share those with you in this website as well.
I also wrote a book on interview techniques that you can still find in Amazon.com here: A Better Job Interview – Questions and Techniques . I plan to later put this into an e-book package that you’ll be able to find here: A Better Job Hunting Package
Today I am a frequent speaker and trainer in various business areas such as IT management, recruitment, entrepreneurship, project management, financial planning, information security, and more. That’s it for now. I hope I’ve helped you understand me and this website more.
